Welcome!
For over 30 years, The Friends of Chamber Music (FCM) has presented concerts in the Kansas City area specializing in the chamber music repertoire. FCM presents an annual season of approximately 16 performances featuring internationally acclaimed artists and ensembles. A wide variety of instrumentation is represented including string quartets, piano recitalists, chamber orchestras, early music ensembles and vocal music, with repertoire extending from the medieval period up to, and including, the present.
Dear Friends,
This season we celebrate our 30th anniversary - 30 years of bringing our community the world's finest chamber music performances. When The Friends of Chamber Music was founded in 1975, our dream was to present a series of concerts that valued beauty, refinement of taste and artistic excellence. The realization of that dream has taken us on a remarkable journey as audiences have experienced the life-affirming power of great chamber music - the poetry that is the intimate voice of classical music.
At the heart of this journey - and of all our endeavors - is you, the audience. Because we value and honor you, we work diligently to bring you programs that are bold, challenging and unique. We bring you artists who are recognized as singular and outstanding in their particular fields of specialty. And we bring you literature that is varied, yet always authentic, distinctive and gloriously beautiful.
This season, we present artists who are new to us: the Jerusalem, Artemis and Kopelman quartets, the Claremont Trio, Tragicomedia and Concerto Palatino, Trio Mediaeval and pianist Lars Vogt. We also welcome the return of old friends such as the Tallis Scholars and master pianists Radu Lupu, András Schiff and Krystian Zimerman - whose artistry is so exceptional that we delight in revisiting what new delights they have to share. After all, who amongst us would choose to see only one work by Rembrandt or one play by Shakespeare?
We also believe that context has a profound effect on how we hear. How lucky we are to have a concert hall as magnificent as the Folly Theater, so ideal for music written in the last 300 years. And our splendid churches, whose ambience and beauty, help us imagine how our ancestors might have been moved by a medieval chant, a Renaissance motet or a Baroque concerto.
Context can also mean juxtaposing unknown works with familiar ones, or familiar artists combined with the new - such as the Borromeo with the young pianist Jonathan Biss, the violinist Giuliano Carmignola with the Academy of Ancient Music or Piffaro with the Flemish vocal ensemble Capilla Flamenca.
Whatever the program, context or artist, our 30th anniversary season promises you many moments to be treasured and many musical riches to be savored.
